Sri Lankan Youth Created A New World Record on International Youth Day - 12th of August, 2011

Five Sri Lankan Youth leaders who are recognized as The Global Changemakers namely Sarah Jameel, Lihini Ratwatte, Sulakshana Senanayake, Sikander Sabeer and Mohamed Husni initiated this remarkable event by rallying fellow youth.

1500 Sri Lankan youth formally registered, stood  together, united, and formed the word “YOUTH” at the Grounds of the University of Colombo in the afternoon of International youth Day: 12 August, 2011 creating  a new World Record. There was an earlier Guinness Record when 1250 persons in France created the word YOUTH.
Among the distinguished Guests presented at the grounds to witness the creating of this new world record were Hon. J. Sri Ranga (Parliamentarian) Prof. Ms. Kashinka Hirimburegama (Vice Chancellor of Colombo University), Mr. Lalith Piyum Perera (Chairman/Director General , National Youth Services Council), Prof. Dr. Geethanjana Mendis (Director-Ministry of Sports), Peace Ambassador Dr.Deshapriya S. Wijetunge (Director General-SUNFO/Coordinator-South Asian Peace Youth Camp, Global Youth Services Day, GCAP, International Youth Peace Festival & Global Citizens Youth Assembly), Mr. Kishore Roy (Manager-British Council) and Ms. Ranmali Gunawardena (Project Director of Youth, SUNFO).
Youth from many Institutions including Global Change Makers of British Council, SUNFO-GCAP, University of Colombo, SLMUN, Protract, Interact, AIESEC, IYV+10, Leo, Sri Lanka Youth and the Girl Guide Association.
 
Sri Lanka-United Nations Friendship Organisation (SUNFO) organized an Exhibiting Point, SUNFO Youth Congress Volunteers played a role in Volunteer Organizing Committee and promoted the event by securing youth participation through SUNFO and its  Java Force, CSDP, MDG Forum etc.
 
Arial photographs were taken by Helicopter flying over the Ground as well as by elevated Camera View Points and satellites in this remarkable world record which showed the Unity among Diversity of Sri Lankan Youth on the International Youth Day.
 
At the beginning of the event, a message of the United Nations Secretary General was delivered, and after, the event received tokens of appreciation/recognitions, a Certificate of Participation by Supporters, partners, and Youth and the National Anthem was honoured.
