The upcoming Rio+20 UNCSD is less than 100 days away! Two decades after the original historic summit, Rio+20 has the objective of securing renewed political commitment to sustainable development, assessing progress towards internationally agreed goals on sustainable development, and addressing new and emerging challenges.
The past 20 years brought many new challenges in this arena, and civil society among others have continually demanded concrete action around the commitments made in 1992. Today, much of the discussion centers around the need to design and implement a process in which Sustainable Development Goals can integrate with the post-2015 process and also build on the MDGs. There is a lack of clarity as to what a set of sustainable development goals would look like, and how Rio+20 and a sustainable development goal framework would fit into the post-2015 discussion as a whole.
Recognizing this, there is a need to inspire, engage in and promote CSO positioning on the necessary link between accelerating the MDGs, agreeing the on the SDGs and designing the Post 2015 framework.
Key Topics for Discussion will include:
- What are/should be the links between Rio+20, sustainable development and the MDGs?
- What process should be followed to advocate for a transition & links between SDGs and Post-2015?
- How can civil society be engaged and their views heard?
